“The bravest thing I ever did was continuing my life when I wanted to die.”
-Juliette Lewis

In Canada, one of the leading causes of death for youth and young adults is suicide. From family and friends to classmates, peers, and teachers, its impact is far-reaching and devastating.

Those who know somebody that died by suicide are left to grieve the loss. Feelings including guilt, anger, resentment, confusion, depression, and/or denial are natural.

If you or someone you know is contemplating suicide, do not suffer alone in silence. Reach out for help as soon as possible.

Common risk factors of suicide include
(but are not limited to):

  • Feeling stressed/pressured/overwhelmed/hopeless;
  • Physical, emotional, mental, and/or sexual abuse;
  • Questioning/confusion over sexual orientation;
  • Having a history of suicide in the family; and
  • Substance/drug abuse.

Known the signs:

Be aware if you notice any of the following in you and/or somebody else:

  • Difficulty sleeping and thinking clearly;
  • Withdrawing from family and friends;
  • Loss of interest in favorite activities;
  • Thinking of and talking about death;
  • Giving away personal possessions.

What to do if you and/or somebody
you know is showing signs of
suicide

  • Talk to somebody you trust, who you can openly share your thoughts and feelings with;
  • For others - ask questions, actively listen, and show love, empathy, and compassion;
  • Connect with local and national resources available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
    • Edmonton Region
